NFIB Pleased Small-Business Priorities Included in '05 Budget Proposal
02/ 02/ 2004
In reaction to President Bush's Fiscal Year 2005 budget proposal sent to Congress today, NFIB Senior Vice President Dan Danner made the following statement.

"NFIB's 600,000 members are pleased to see again the president's commitment to making health care more affordable and accessible to Americans. Bush's budget proposal calls for the enactment of Association Health Plans (AHPs). These small-business health plans are NFIB's No. 1 priority - they would allow small businesses to band together and buy health insurance at a lower cost. The recently enacted Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) also got a boost in the budget, as it proposes to allow people to deduct 100 percent of their HSA premiums. Many of NFIB's members are taking advantage of this new health-care savings tool.

"President Bush called on Congress to make permanent the tax cuts in his State of the Union address. And today he's asking for it in writing in his 2005 budget proposal. NFIB members have long fought for taking the mystery out of the tax code, especially the permanent repeal of the death tax. Uncertainty in the tax code is unfair to small-business owners.

"NFIB applauds President Bush for drafting a budget proposal that does not raise taxes, particularly when there's pressure to do so for transportation needs. A balanced budget that meets this country's needs, while reducing our deficit is essential and this budget proposal is a strong first step toward that goal."

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is the nation's largest small-business advocacy group. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its 600,000 members in Washington and all 50 state capitals.
